* The stripline impedance calculator requires careful consideration of the ratio of the trace width ('w') to the height above the ground plane ('h'). The (w/h) ratio should be maintained between 0.1 and 2.0 for this calculator to produce accurate and reliable results. This range is critical for ensuring that the electromagnetic field around the stripline is adequately confined, which is essential for maintaining stable impedance and good signal integrity. Values outside this range may not adhere to standard modeling assumptions used in stripline design, potentially leading to inaccuracies and performance issues.

Stripline transmission lines consist of a conductive trace enclosed entirely within a dielectric substrate, with parallel ground planes on either side. The impedance of a stripline depends on the width of the trace (w), the thickness of the trace (t), the distance to the ground plane (h), and the dielectric constant of the substrate (εr).

The calculator uses a specific formula to accurately estimate the impedance of your stripline:

  1. Logarithmic Function for Impedance Calculation:

    • Z0 = (60 / √(εr)) × log((1.9 × (2 × h + t)) / (0.8 × w + t))
    • This function calculates the impedance by taking into account the effective width of the stripline. The logarithmic part of the formula considers the increased path of electromagnetic waves caused by the trace's width and thickness and the total dielectric height (2h + t), effectively adjusting for both the conductive and dielectric properties influencing signal propagation.
  2. Effective Dielectric Constant:

    • εr
    • This value represents the dielectric constant of the substrate, which is crucial in determining how the electric field interacts with the material, thereby affecting the impedance calculation and the overall signal integrity within the stripline.
